How it works

The Xbox Series X|S controller looks nearly identical to the Xbox One pad but adds a dedicated Share button, a hybrid D-pad, textured triggers and bumpers, and USB-C charging. Because it enumerates with current Microsoft vendor IDs, browsers give it a clean, correctly-labelled layout, which makes it one of the most reliable pads to test online.

How to connect your Xbox Series X|S Controller

USB-C cable, Xbox Wireless, or Bluetooth. For Bluetooth: hold the Pair button on top until the Xbox logo flashes fast, then pair from your OS Bluetooth settings.

How the Xbox Series X|S Controller maps in your browser

In Chromium browsers it maps to the W3C 'standard' gamepad layout, so every face button, bumper, trigger and stick lands on the expected index. The Share button sits above the standard 16 inputs and is exposed as an extra button on some firmware — if you see a 17th button flicker, that is the Share capture key, not a fault.

Thumbstick type and drift risk

Standard potentiometer (ALPS) thumbsticks — the same wear-prone design as previous Xbox pads. This is the model most affected by stick drift after 6–12 months of heavy use, so the circularity and drift tests matter here.

Runs on 2×AA or the optional Play & Charge rechargeable pack; battery level is not exposed to browsers.

Known issues and quirks

Bluetooth mode disables the 3.5mm headphone jack. Firmware updates (via Xbox Accessories app) fix early Bluetooth disconnect bugs.

Check every button and trigger registers, watch the stick crosshairs for centering, and run the circularity test to quantify stick wear. Suspect drift? My controller is connected but nothing shows

Browsers hide gamepads until you press a button — press any button once. If it still doesn’t appear, try a different USB port or re-pair Bluetooth, then reload the page.

Vibration test does nothing

Vibration via the browser works on Chromium browsers with most Xbox and DualSense pads. Safari and Firefox have limited or no support — that is a browser limitation, not your controller.

The layout doesn’t match my controller

Unknown models fall back to a generic layout. Every button and axis is still shown by index, so you can fully test the pad even without a matching picture.

Do I need to install anything?

Why do axis numbers jitter slightly at rest?

Analog sticks always have a little electrical noise, typically under 1–2%. Constant offsets beyond that suggest drift — run the dedicated drift test.

Can I test controller vibration?

Yes, on Chromium-based browsers with supported pads. Click the vibration button; if nothing happens, your browser or pad doesn’t expose rumble to the web.
